"an exhibition conceived by ATOPOS in Athens, is the outcome of an investigation on paper clothing, a long-forgotten but very popular phenomenon in the United States at the end of the '60s.

The fad can be traced back to 1966 when manufacturing company Scott Paper Company used the paper dress to promote their toilet paper and paper tissues.

It didn't take long for designers to grab the idea and launch a proper 'Paper Fashion'. Disposable clothing had a very futuristic. As one textile designer stated for Life Magazine, "Who is going to do laundry in space?"

The curator of the exhibition and director of ATOPOS, Vassilis Zidianakis, asked today's fashion designers and artists to create something of their own inspired by the over 100 authentic paper dresses that form part of its collection. The show puts side by side dozens of authentic sixties paper dresses, and the creations by the likes of Sophia Kokosalaki, Michael Cepress, Yiorgos Eleftheriades, Johanna Trudzinski, Takashi Murakami, Bas Kosters, Angelos Bratis, Deux Hommes, Marcus Tomlinson etc"

"Sonia Rykiel's exhibition at Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris will be open Wednesday through April 19, 2009 celebrating her 40 years in fashion featuring some 200 outfits. "The exhibit is organized by theme and not chronologically because many of Rykiel's leitmotifs - lace, stripes, rhinestones, black, etc. - have remained constant throughout her career, said Saillard. Visitors enter the show via a black rotunda where Rykiel's recorded voice reads some of her pronouncements on style. From there, display cases are dedicated to knitwear, printed dresses, velour jogging suits, marabou coats and slouchy pantsuits - all Rykiel signatures. Each window juxtaposes a piece from early in her career with a more recent one elaborating on the same theme. The second half of the exhibit upstairs includes several windows devoted to large-scale pictures of Rykiel-wearing models by photographer Dominique Issermann.” via WWD" added on 2008-11-17

RRRIPP!! Paper Fashion
From October 11, 2008 to February 2, 2009

"After the Benaki Museum in Athens and before the Fashion Museum in Antwerp and the Museum of Design in London, Mudam presents RRRIPP!! Paper Fashion. This exhibition conceived by ATOPOS, constitutes a research result on paper clothing, a very widespread phenomenon in the United States at the end of the sixties, but little known by the general public. Starting with the historical context, the exhibition is seeking new ways to treat the topic of material and ways of working fabrics, woven or non-woven materials, like paper or similar ones. Presenting various methods to use paper in the fashion of today, it shows design, art and publicity objects, as well as filmed fashion shows and recent creations by some of the most innovating fashion designers like Hiroaki Ohya, Hussein Chalayan or Issey Miyake.

"To coincide with Diane von Furstenberg's Wonder Women inspired Holiday Collection, she launches a new comic book called "Be the Wonder Woman You Can Be, Featuring the Adventures of Diva, Viva & Fifa".
"I always wanted to have these three characters Diva, Viva and Fifa, as in DVF, and we came up with the concept," she said. The three heroines in the comic book will all be wearing DVF clothes, "the $25 comic, as well as a $50 special T-shirt and $230 tote, will be sold at DVF boutiques and dvf.com, and benefit Vital Voices, an organization that helps to empower women."

The key is that the three heroines — all of whom are wearing DVF clothes — make things happen. Diva, for instance, finds herself in a downtown bar to celebrate a male colleague's successful leveraged buyout and his pending promotion. It turns out, however, that Diva was the brains behind the project. She looks at a reflective surface and sees a DVF, which emboldens her to "Be the Wonder Woman you can be." Diva makes the point the lbo was her idea, and lands a promotion.

Viva, meanwhile, accompanies her older brothers to a music gig. Feeling intimidated to stay in the van, the reflection of DVF encourages her to get up on stage to sing. She ends up with a record deal.

Finally, mother-of-three Fifa receives news she is a finalist for a Gourmet Cooking award. Juggling the responsibilities of running a home, she is unsure that she can attend the ceremony, but DVF empowers her to get a babysitter and she wins the trophy.

"I am Diva, Viva and Fifa altogether, I am DVF," von Furstenberg said. "It’s not so much that I identify with each of them, though. The idea is that if you feel insecure, look at yourself in the mirror, and through the reflection remember to be the Wonder Woman you can be. That’s my message."
