This marvelous composition is created by Ola, a French-Polish artist using handmade paper (her own), flowers, fruits, and even vegetables. How she embeds these materials in the paper is her secret, but the result goes far beyond the concept of the herborie or representational pressed flower picture. Ola uses her garden of materials like paint to create a tableau. Her works are totally original and unique; each one is signed by the artist. Presented here ready for framing at your discretion. You may prefer to frame the feuille de fleurs (sheet of flowers) between 2 panes of glass to exhibit them translucently...or you may prefer to frame them matted in the traditional manner. Either way, the result will be exquisite.

Provençal silverware holder

All over the south of France, from the mountains of Savoie and Auvergne down into Provence, the tradition of kitchen ceramics includes just this sort of égouttoire de couverts, or silverware drainer. As the silverware was washed in the sink, it was placed in this holder hanging on the wall, where it stayed until the next meal. True to tradition, this model from the Drome Provençal has two small holes pierced in the bottom of each compartment to let water drain away. In fact, I use mine for its intended purpose, using it to drain and store silverware with wooden or bone handles that can't go in the dishwasher. It makes a charming and typically French way of storing silverware. Of course, you can also use it to keep utensils handy, or simply stuff it with dried flowers or herbs. You could even use it as a mini-planter--something I plan to try. One friend uses hers to organize the contents of what had been the kitchen junk drawer. However you use it, the Provençal silverware holder adds a grace note of French tradition to your kitchen or dining room. Provençal Marmite

Elegant daubière

This elegant daubière has become one of my very favorite cooking pots, both in Paris and Provence. Of generous capacity, it has the classic concave lid of the daubière which can be filled with water to reduce evaporation from within. But unlike the usual potbellied form of most daubières, this one is wide, allowing you to make the world's most succulent roast chicken in it as well as the usual repertoire of daubes (stews) and other slow-simmered dishes. It is big enough to easily accommodate a chicken with the lid on. (Remove the lid for the last 20 minutes of cooking to allow the chicken's skin to brown.) Now that I have this pot, I can't imagine life without it. Color is straw yellow and it is extremely thick and heavy. A treasure!

Laborer's lunchbox

Once upon a time, French agricultural workers carried their lunches to the field in pots just like this one. An exact replica of an 18th century model, this pot du laboureur will grace your kitchen counter with bucolic French charm, while storing sugar, flour, or the ingredients of your choice. I use mine to store coarse gray sea salt in the large pot and fine flaked fleur de sel in the smaller one, within easy reach of my stovetop. Provençal daubière

Just what is a daubière, you ask? It is a clay pot, traditional to the south of France, with a pot belly, a narrower neck, a lid with a well, and a handle off to one side. The daubière is traditionally used to make a daube, or slow-simmered stew, usually of beef, but lamb, pork, and even octopus have been rendered into daubes by the fertile French culinary imagination. The peculiar form of the daubière is rooted in function. The narrow neck helps prevent evaporation of the cooking liquids over the several-hour simmering period. Likewise, the well in the lid is made to be filled with water, whose evaporation helps retain the liquid within by causing it to condense inside the lid. A daubière can be nestled over coals in the back of the fireplace, or, more conventionally and modern, be used over gentle heat on top of the stove or in the oven. It is ideal not only for stews but also for soups and dried beans of all types. Watch for Paula Wolfert's upcoming Clay Pot Cooking for myriad ways to use this wonderful pot.
