baby starter pack
Planning for what to buy for a new baby can be challenging: parents have a tendency to buy too many things and to be seduced by items which are cute rather than practical. My son is now seven months old, and I have put together a list of the two dozen items which, in retrospect, are most indispensable. The focus here is on practicality and utility. Some of these items may not look that great, but you will most likely need them. Of course I couldn't resist to insert a couple of fun items too!

I don't use blankets, just sleep sacks. When Julien was a few months old, blankets seemed like they would smother him; and now that he is 7 months old he wriggles so much in his bed that a blanket always ends up in a corner. So sleep sacks are the solution, and they come in light weight versions for summer and heavier weight for winter. added on 2008-07-30

After having seen these in France, they seem much more practical than a giant molded plastic tub. I've managed to find them in the US, at the link.

The thermobaby bath seat adjusts to fit a baby's body, supports the head, and allows your child to lay in a regular bath and play. added on 2008-07-30

This type of chair seems better than the stand-alone high-chair, because it doesn't take much room and allows the baby to sit at the table with us. added on 2008-07-29

As store bought baby food is usually horrid and expensive, I am making home-made baby purees with this hand blender. Just blend any fruits and veggies, or whatever you are eating - and all you have to wash is the blade part. A hand blender is a cheaper and better option than a kitchen top one.

This coverall works well, having:

- a zipper instead of snaps: to facilitate dressing or changing your baby when you are tired and in the dark.

- footsies: so you don't need socks, which always seemed to have wiggled off by morning.

- turn-back cuffs, so your baby doesn't scratch her face (until you figure out how to cut your baby's nails, lots of face scratching will happen!) added on 2008-07-29

Baby costumes are essential, because this is the only time you will be able to force your offspring into stuff you think is cute, before they are big enough to fight back. added on 2008-07-29

Coated bibs are a must when your baby starts on solid food, in fact you might as well invest in a bio-hazard outfit - you can wipe this bib after each meal and don't need to put it in the laundry (although they can be advertised as machine washable, for some unknown reason). I love this one, from Marimekko. added on 2008-07-29

My son loved his play mat from birth to about 5 months. He played in it for hours, and then took naps in it.

This play mat from IKEA is the first of many things that will ruin any minimalist, mid-century modern home. And this was the least garish that we could find. added on 2008-07-29

I bought this one second-hand from a friend, which may be kind of 'eeew' for something that you put your intimate parts in. But by the time you've been exposed to the number of body fluids that go with birth and a small baby, you wouldn't be phased buying a second hand foot spa off Craigs List, from a total stranger with itchy feet.

The point being: that there are tons of things you will need, and for not very long, so second hand nearly always makes sense. added on 2008-07-29

After trying various kinds of baby carriers, I wish I had the ERGObaby carrier - which friends are raving about. It is sturdy, yet made of light fabric, and has a lower back belt, which spreads the weight of the baby evenly on the back.

I tried the BabyBjorn carrier and loved it, until it hurt my shoulders as my son got heavier. I tried the Envenflo Comfort Vent Carrier, but both my son and I got too hot and sweaty; and I tried 2 slings, but didn't like to carry our baby sideways. added on 2008-07-29

This is my, and America's favorite infant car seat, for infants from 5 lbs to 22 lbs.

Its simple, practical and mercifully plain, although there are no car seats that are as well designed as some of the newer strollers.
